St. Eustatius, the Golden Rock
Known as the “Golden Rock” because of its thriving economy in the 18th Century when it was the most important Dutch colony in the Caribbean, St. Eustatius, now a “special municipality” or “public entity” of the Netherlands like Saba and Bonaire since October 10, 2010, was the first foreign authority to acknowledge the independence of the United States of America in 1776. The US dollar is the official currency of this 8 square mile island of great historical importance. The Quill crater is its most popular tourist attraction.
