US-bound Transit Passengers Can Now Carry Liquid Aerosols and Gels on Board

SIMPSON BAY, St. Maarten (February 10, 2014) With effect from Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, transit passengers on flights to destinations in the USA will be allowed to carry duty free Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) over 3.4 ounces as carry-on items.

This allowance in effect is based on TSA Security Directive #1544-14-01. These LAGs, however, must be transported in the sealed ICAO approved bags, also referred to as STEBs (Security Tamper Evident Bags).

SXM Airport Security at the Departure and Transit screening areas will permit these items beyond the security checkpoint after the required inspections.

This amendment ONLY applies to transit passengers who have purchased duty free items at the airport upon their departure, Jerry Sprott, Manager of the Security Department at SXM Airport further clarified.

Transit passengers with LAGs above 3.4 ounces, which do not meet the criteria mentioned above, will have to hand these items over for confiscation at the screening checkpoints.
